What is You2stem.com?
You2stem.com is a remote learning program that is focused on fostering growth, creativity, and inclusion. Today's science, technology, engineering, mathematics programs (STEM) are often only available in affluent communities and regularly exclude many students. We have built a program that is economically affordable and available to everyone!

Where did You2stem originate from?
The original program was started as an in-person program called Brentwood Maker Academy in 2018. Prior to the pandemic, the program had 150 enrolled students in group classes. Students would work on STEM related projects and challenges in a hands on learning environment.

Why is the program available online?

The original brick and mortar program had two primary flaws. The first was that students have different levels of learning and comprehension. This led to some students falling behind and not completing some projects in the allotted amount of time. The second, was the cost. Due to high overhead costs, the tuition remained high and only made the program accessible to those who could afford it. It is because of these two problems that the program has be reintroduced as an online platform. Students can now work at their own pace and because the program comes at a significant cost reduction, it is now available to everyone.

How does it work?

Every week we post new content on Tuesday morning. The content is spread across four primary student groups. The general STEM categories are grades K-5 and 6-12. There is also a section for special needs students in the same grade levels. In addition to the weekly video lessons posted for each category, we add in weekly challenges and TinkerCad lessons for the students to work on themselves. So each week, any given category will have one STEM video lesson, one weekly challenge, and one TinkerCad lesson. We also provide the associated worksheets for each lesson.

Does our curriculum follow educational standards?

The short answer is no. This is a supplemental program that is designed to boost a student's abilities and creative thinking. We do not follow a traditional educational model. Parents over the years have valued our program because it helps students to think outside the box and learn new concepts that shape their futures in the direction that they show interest in.

What is a weekly challenge?

Weekly challenges are lessons that stoke a student's creative mind. We do not have video lessons associated with these challenges. They are for the students to do on their own. When the original brick and mortar program was running, students would often come to class with creative projects that they built on their own using the skills and knowledge they gained during class. We decided to add an element into our program that encouraged students to do the same.

What is TinkerCad?

TinkerCad is a free online program that teaches students how to design in 3D. We have used it over the years as a platform for students to create and visualize their ideas. All you need to do is head to TinkerCad.com and create an account. The best part is it is free!
